Dr. James Beaty – Shash Haiti Chair
Dr James Beaty is the Assistant Group Supervisor of the Biomedical Engineering Group at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. He leads a team of expert researchers developing motor decode algorithms and implantable devices for neural control of prosthetics. Dr. Beaty holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Yale University, MBA from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, MSc in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Connecticut, and BSc in Biomedical Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Emmanuelle Clerisme – Shash Haiti Chair
Dr. Emmanuelle Clerisme-Beaty is a Medical Doctor and an Associate Director of Medical Affairs Clinical Development at Boehringer Ingelheim, a leading German-based international pharmaceutical company. Prior to working with Boehringer Ingelheim, Dr. Clerisme-Beaty was an Assistant Professor of Medicine Johns Hopkins University Division of Pulmonary Criticare and served as Director of Pulmonary Rehabilitation. She has both clinical and research experience in obstructive lung disease, and has published several articles on asthma and obesity. Her current role involves developing and evaluating therapies for patients with respiratory diseases. She has worked as a volunteer health provider in Haiti and was part of a disaster relief team during the 2010 earthquake through the International Medical Corps, a non-profit humanitarian relief organization providing medical training and emergency health care worldwide. Dr. Clerisme-Beaty received her medical degree from Yale University where she also completed a residency in Internal Medicine. She is trained in Pulmonary Critical Care at Johns Hopkins University and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary and Critical Care. She holds a Masters in Health Science from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.
Lt. Damian Small – Shash Jamaica Chair
Lieutenant Damian Small is the Head of Security for the Unicomer Group (Jamaica) and a Security Expert from Kingston, Jamaica. Prior to this, he served as Platoon Commander in the Jamaica Defence Force in the late 1990s to 2001. He has received extensive training as a French Commando, as well as training in counter insurgence strategies, safety management, port and aviation security and risk management. The former Jamaica Defence Force Officer has worked with some of the top security companies in Jamaica, including Securicor and the Guardsman Group, where he held the position of Operations Manager. He is well-known for his extensive knowledge of security strategies and combat skills. Lt. Small is a graduate of Kingston College, Kaplan University and the Royal Military Academy.
Dr. Damani Piggott – Shash T&T Chair
Dr. Damani Piggott is a Clinical and Research Fellow in Infectious Diseases. His clinical and research experience includes HIV, syphilis, tuberculosis, and childhood immunization. He has served as a volunteer clinician in South Africa, and has been involved in civic activities relative to the education of students from the elementary to the graduate school level. Dr Piggott received his B.S. degree in Biology and Spanish from Morehouse College. He received his MD and a Ph.D. in Immunology from Yale University, followed by specialty training in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Yale New Haven Hospital.
Gloria Ruto, MBA – Shash Africa Chair
Gloria is a Global Sales 1st Integration Project Manager at Shell in London, United Kingdom. Gloria has 9 years experience in leading global IT project and Business Transformational change programmes (impacting Business Policies, Organisational Design, Processes & IT platforms). Gloria’s specialties include Downstream – Oil & Gas, Business Transformation (Policies, People, Processes & Systems) IT Project Management, Organisational Change, Stakeholder Management, Virtual Working. She was a 2011 nominee for the Women of the Future Award. She was the first runner up in the MBA Star Award. Gloria holds an Executive Management of Business Administration (EMBA) degree from Imperial College, London and a BSc Honors Business Information Technology. Gloria has received the VP Awards for excellent delivery & team work.
Dr Shawndra Hill, PhD – Shash Ethiopia Chair
Dr. Shawndra Hill is an Assistant Professor in Operations and Information Management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Generally, she studies data mining, machine learning and statistical relational learning and their alignment with business problems. Specifically, she researches the value to companies of mining data on how consumers interact with each other – for targeted marketing, advertising and fraud detection. Her past and present industry partners include AT&T Labs Research, ClearForest, and Siemens Energy & Automation. Her recent work appears in IEEE Transactions on Data and Knowledge Engineering, Journal of Computational and Graphical Statistics, SIGKDD Explorations, and Statistical Science. Her research is funded in part by the Office of Naval Research, Google, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Shawndra holds a BSc in Mathematics from Spelman College, a BEE from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a PhD in Information Systems from NYU’s Stern School of Business.
Dr. Anthony Ruto – Shash Kenya Chair
Dr. Anthony Ruto is the Chief Technology Officer of Within Technologies Ltd, an engineering design company based in London. He currently leads the development of Within’s design software used to create state-of-the-art 3D structural designs for automotive, aerospace, medical and footwear industries. Dr. Ruto has previously been involved in the research and development of a number of innovative technologies including image-based medical diagnosis, 3D body scanning, digital TV broadcast scheduling at the BBC and a patented 3D monitoring system used for radiotherapy treatment. Dr. Ruto holds a first degree in Computer Science at the University of Cambridge and the Master of Science and PhD in Engineering at University College London, specialising in Virtual Environments, Imaging and Visualisation.
Gloria Omaswa, MSc – Shash Uganda Chair
Gloria Omaswa is a Communication Strategist currently working as a Strategic Planner with Studio Squared, a division of the Martin Agency in Richmond, VA. She has a Law degree from Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda and a MSc in Communication Strategy from the VCU Brandcenter. Gloria has a strong interest in the development of Africa and its people. While at Makerere University she was part of a drive to inform and educate the student community about the plight of internally displaced people in North Eastern Uganda. This drive culminated in a fundraising push that raised resources from among the university community. She held the post of Speaker of the vibrant Makerere Law Society. Gloria has over 5 years experience in the advertising industry across multiple geographies having worked in Uganda, Kenya and Switzerland as well as the United States.
Julian Hall – Shash UK Chair
Julian Hall is an award-winning Digital Marketer, Speaker, Author, Lecturer and Chairman and CEO of the Hall Group of Companies in London, UK. Prior to this, he has worked as a consultant to major financial corporations, such as Morgan Stanley, Société Générale, Schroder, Schlumberger Sema, Siemens & General Electric in London. Mr. Hall specializes in helping companies big and small to meet and exceed their revenue targets using digital strategies that work. His company has been awarded UK’s Most Innovative Internet. He was selected to mentor the UK’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2010, and he launched the UK’s first 100% user generated news channel – YouReportTV.com. Mr. Hall is also ambassador for the Richard Branson’s Virgin Pioneer Programme, as well as a popular columnist in the Voice Newspaper and a representative to the Jamaican High Commission and the UK Diaspora Youth Association.
Dr Weslynne Ashton, PhD – Shash USA Chair
Dr. Weslynne Ashton an Assistant Professor of Environmental Management and Sustainability at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT)’s Stuart School of Business. Prior to IIT, she was as an Associate Research Scientist and Lecturer at Yale University where she also directed the “Industrial Ecology in Developing Countries” program. Dr. Ashton works on issues of sustainable development, particularly environmental performance assessment, corporate sustainability strategy and social entrepreneurship. She was a US National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow and a Teresa Heinz Scholar for Environmental Research. She holds a PhD and MSc in Environmental Science from Yale University and a BSc in Environmental Engineering with a minor in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
